A wooden fort was built around their storehouse, church, and small homes. The fort was burned many times. Disease, famine, and continuing attacks took their toll. Determination, resolve, and the will to survive are their legacy. From the "starving time" to the arrival of new supply ships, some of them endured! The Festival opens with a traditional African drum call sending polyrhythm through the air, a ceremonial procession, and blessing of the elders. The beautiful waterfront of Portsmouth is transformed into an image of its Sister City, Eldoret, Kenya. Experience African heritage and culture through sights, sounds and smells.
