In September 1814 a Maryland lawyer named Francis Scott Key was detained aboard a British ship of truce in Baltimore harbor. He witnessed the 25-hour British bombardment of Ft. McHenry, seeing his country's flag drift in and out of view through the smoke and haze. By the "dawns early light" of September 14, 1814 he saw the flag still waving and was inspired to pen his emotions and words to a poem. This tour highlights the significant events in Key's life, as well as the fort, the flag, and our National Anthem.
